7 outdoor adventures to do as a family this summer

  • Emily Smith

The summer holidays are fast approaching and while the weather is warm, it’s the perfect time to plan some outdoor family time. Kids will love getting back to nature and having plenty of room to burn off all that energy, while outdoor activities can be incredibly budget friendly – it’s win-win.

When you’re encouraging your kids to get outdoors it doesn’t just have to be a trip to the park to play on the swings and a picnic in the garden – although these will go down a treat. If you’re looking for something new to try, how about giving these seven ideas a chance?

1. Give bike riding a try

If you already have confident bike riders, plan an excursion to the woods, where there are no roads to worry about and the kids can focus on going fast and honing their skills. If your kids have yet to master the bike, the summer is the perfect time to teach them, or you can hire equipment so they’re still part of the adventure.

2. Plan a hike

A hike might sound like a nightmare with young children but it can be a lot of fun. Most school-aged kids should be able to manage 5 miles over a day, with several breaks for snacks and relaxing. With a bit of planning, you can make sure you have toilets nearby and a park for entertainment waits at the end.

3. Attend a kid friendly festival

There are loads of kid friendly festivals taking place this year. Many cities and towns are hosting at least one-day events that mean minimal hassle but lots of amusement while basking in the sun.

4. Comb the beaches

With miles of coastline, there are plenty of beaches to explore in the UK and combing for seashells and creatures is a great way to spend the day, even if it’s too cold for a paddle. Don’t live near a beach? Have a quick search to see if there are any urban ‘beaches’ being installed in your area.

5. Head to rivers and ponds

Many children have a fascination with animals. Heading to shallow rivers and ponds with a fishing net in hand can provide hours of entertainment as you search for fish, tadpoles, and much more.

6. Create a sports day

Give the typical park a boost by taking sports equipment you have lying around, from footballs and bats and balls to items that can double as cones to run around, you have plenty of opportunities to get creative and turn it into a friendly competition.

7. Have an aerial adventure

If you’ve got older kids this love an adrenaline rush, an aerial course could be just what you need to give a real summer holiday treat. They’ll love getting into the treetops and tackling the challenging obstacles.
