Creative rainy day ideas to beat the summer holiday blues

  • Emily Smith

The summer holidays are meant for getting outdoors and having fun in the sun. Unfortunately, British weather means that rainy days and grey clouds can interrupt event your best-laid plans. But don’t let that stop you having a great time with the kids over the summer holidays.

Even if you need to head indoors to get away from the rain, there are plenty of entertainment options at your disposal that don’t need electronic gadgets. We’ve got five ideas that let kids get creative to plan just in case the weather isn’t as good as you’d hoped.

1. Craft some home decorations

Stock up on arts and craft supplies before the summer holidays and you’ll never be short of something creative to do. There are plenty of options for crafting decorations to liven up your kid’s bedrooms or the rest of the home – they’ll love doing and displaying them proudly. Think colourful dream catchers, vibrant rain catchers, and paper plate masks.

2. Plan a treasure hunt

An indoor treasure hunt is sure to be a lot of fun. Plan a mixture of clues, puzzles, and riddles to really put their brains to the test and make it challenging. If you need some inspiration, there are plenty of resources online to make it simple. Will you make your mini pirates compete or work as a team?

3. Building block challenges

Whether you boast a huge tub of Lego or traditional wooden building blocks, creating fun challenges can keep the kids entertained for hours. From creating huge sculptures to intricate aeroplanes that look as though they could almost fly, it’s easy to tailor to your child’s age and interests.

4. Baking competition

If you have budding chefs (or those that love to make a mess in the kitchen) a baking competition can really liven up a day. For younger children, decorating plain cupcakes or cookies is a great option, while older kids might enjoy picking a recipe out of the book to make from scratch. Think of it as your very own Bake Off competition.

5. Camp indoors

Bring an outdoor adventure in by camping indoors. With plenty of blankets, cushions, and a few pieces of furniture to act as supports, kids will love getting involved in making the ‘tents’. Turn off the lights and break out the torches as you tell spooky stories, indulge in some toasted marshmallows, and let them use their sleeping bags for the night.
